CHAPTER 10

Adam was standing behind the camper where he was hidden from view, practising the moves to Embrace Tiger, Return to Mountain. He had done his warm-ups, the deep breaths, shaking himself, letting the tension go, moving very slowly, stretching his arms over his head, trying to get a sense of balance. “Let your spine be like a willow,” his tai chi book said. He concentrated on allowing the yang space of his body to be aware of the yin space around him — letting his body rest in space, trying to capture both the feeling of letting go and the sensation of awareness. Don’t try too hard, he kept reminding himself. Find your centre. Let your body stretch and move and return to your centre. Keep your weight centred between your legs, ready to move in any direction.

Jamie appeared.

“Hi,” he said.

“Is that judo?” she asked.

Adam shook his head. “It’s tai chi, but it’s the same preliminary training used in all the martial arts.”

“Could you teach me some of it? Please?”

Adam read her some passages from his book, and she concentrated on his instructions.

“Do it a little more slowly,” he said. “Follow your breath. Exhale on the down movements. Inhale as you move up. That’s it. Slo-o-owly.”

“Like, wow! It must take a lot of practice to be able to hold the positions the way you do. Maybe I could borrow your book sometime?”

“For sure,” Adam said.

Jamie lay on the grass, and he sat beside her. She was wearing a turquoise shirt, and her eyes were aquamarine. They reminded Adam of a mountain lake.

“Okay, the thing with Hans’s pack didn’t work out quite right, but now we have to see Sy’s hat, right?” Jamie closed her eyes.

“I guess so, but I sure as heck don’t know how to go about that.”

“I’ve got a plan.”

“You have?” Adam had mixed emotions. He fervently hoped her plan wouldn’t involve too many little white lies, or big black ones.

“The plan is ...” Her voice was low and conspiratorial. “First, I’ll knock on his door in the middle of the night and tell him I’m scared. Then I’ll get him to come outside with me.” She sat up, stretched her legs straight, and reached for her ankles with both hands.

“Then what?”

She turned her head sideways and peered up at him from the vicinity of her knees. “Once I get him out I’ll persuade him to go with me to look for a burglar and then you go in and do a quick search.”

“Is that all?” Adam jerked his shoulders back. “Just a quick look, eh? In somebody else’s camper in the middle of the night? Thanks a heck of a bunch. I don’t think so.”

“Come on, Adam. Do you want to solve this crime or not?”

“Sure I do, but you’ve got to be nuts. That’s the most hare-brained scheme I’ve ever heard.” Luring Sy out of his camper, expecting he would fall for her story and not want to wake up everybody else in camp if she was afraid of an intruder — the plan was crazy.
